Heat, Hustle, and Human Connection: Reflecting on My First Cannes Lions

Meg Sanford

Director

There is nothing quite like your first time stepping onto the Croisette during Cannes Lions.

Going in, you hear the rumors: the absolute sea of brilliant creative minds, the unending roster of rooftops and beach parties, the glamor of walking past a celebrity every 5 minutes, the high-stakes executive meetings, and – of course – the relentless South of France summer heat.

But experiencing it firsthand is an entirely different beast.

As a first-timer, this year’s festival was a beautiful, whirlwind masterclass in modern marketing.

Between supporting major client moments on-site for brands like DoorDash and Chime, staffing high-profile speaking engagements and media interviews, connecting with my global Hotwire colleagues, and running from networking happy hours to evening events, the energy was infectious.

It was intense, it was exhausting, and it was deeply inspiring.

Amidst the packed schedule and the endless bottles of water, I walked away with four clear takeaways about where our industry is heading – and how we, as communicators, can help our clients win.

1. Creativity is Our Greatest Currency

If Cannes proves anything, it’s that bold, unexpected creative ideas are the absolute lifeblood of business growth.

Walking through the Palais and seeing the caliber of award-winning work was a massive reminder that we can never afford to play it safe.

As agency partners, our job isn’t just to execute, it’s to push boundaries.

We need to continuously bring our clients those out-of-the-box, slightly terrifying concepts that have the power to disrupt categories and push their businesses forward.

The biggest lesson here? If you have a great idea, share it.

Boldness is what gets remembered.

2. PR and Comms is a True Growth Engine

For a long time, the industry treated public relations and strategic communications as a “nice-to-have” layer – the team you call to amplify a campaign after it’s already been built.

Cannes 2026 made it undeniably clear that the pendulum has shifted.

The work we do is a fundamental business growth engine.

Strategic, narrative-driven storytelling isn’t just about managing reputation; it’s a high-impact tool that drives awareness and delivers measurable bottom-line impact.

When brand story and corporate strategy are perfectly aligned, comms moves business.

3. Human Storytelling is the Ultimate Differentiator in an AI Era

You couldn’t walk five feet on the beach without bumping into a conversation about AI.

But as the digital ecosystem becomes increasingly cluttered with automated content and algorithmic monotony, a new premium has emerged.

Authentic, human-driven storytelling is now the ultimate competitive advantage.

AI can optimize and scale, but it cannot live, breathe, or feel.

The brands and leaders that stand out moving forward will be the ones who double down on real connections, shared human experiences, and authentic storytelling.

4. Experiential is Alive, Thriving, and Essential

In a world seemingly dominated by screens, Cannes 2026 was proof that the craving for in-person connection is stronger than ever.

From major beach activations to craft tables and happy hours, the most impactful moments of the festival happened when people connected face-to-face.

Brands that lean heavily into experiential marketing – creating unforgettable moments for consumers – are the ones winning the battle for attention.

We need to keep encouraging our clients to think big, take risks on real-world footprints, and create moments that people actively choose to experience.

The Verdict

My first Cannes was a blur of incredible client wins, powerful global collaboration, and plenty (and I mean plenty) of sweat – but above all, it left me incredibly energized.

To the clients who crushed it, the new connections made over rosé and coffee, and everyone who hustled to bring these moments to life: Santé.

Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
